Sony FDR-AX33 Bottom Plate Replacement (3D Print)

This is a 3D printable replacement bottom plate for the Sony® FDR-AX33. Especially intended for those who are having the same issues as we are having with almost all of our Sony® camera’s: The tripod mount screw breaking out of the base/bottom plate.

For more information and why I decided to make a replacement part myself, please read bellow 🙂

This download contains a .obj file! NOT an .stl (which I usually use), but most (if not all) slicers will be perfectly able to slice it 🙂

Information

I had contacted and asked Sony® several times and through different channels and all I wanted was that they would give me an option to buy an (original) replacement bottom for the camera. And often the only reply I got was (a default template) saying: “You can sent it in, but it is out of warranty now, so you will have to pay all costs yourself” (or something along those lines).

Some of the estimates they gave me where just absurdly high for a damn piece of poorly engineered ABS to be honest. One of the quotes they gave me would almost be as much as getting a second hand AX33!

Why am I so ‘frustrated’ about this and calling it a poorly engineered piece of ABS? Well because this definitely isn’t the first Sony camera it happend to with me (and the same goes for several several of our friends and co-workers🤷🏽‍♀️).

There are also more than enough posts online about people complaining about the tripod screw/mount breaking out of their Sony camera bodies.

Don’t get me wrong: I absolutely LOVE our Sony camera’s and their image quality, but their tripod mounts are just garbage to be honest (No, we’re not using cheap tripods either btw).

We never had/have issues like this with our Nikon or other brand camera’s, and because I was fed up with yet another AX33 breaking down on exactly the same spot, I decided to make my own replacement part.

It has been working for years now (as of 2024 about 4 years to be exact) and after I replaced the original with my own, I never had any issues at all anymore. The funny thing is that I even used PLA just do to a first ‘quick fit test’ before I would print it in something like PETG. But that first ‘Test Fit PLA Piece‘? It’s still on there without ANY wear or tear, and it didn’t even warped (despite the fact that the AX33 can sometimes get quite warm during longer filming sessions).

Post Print Clean up Tip:
You will need to clean up the brim and such from your print (obviously), but it MIGHT also be required to sand one of the edges of the bottom a bit to make it fit into your camera. I have repaired three FDR-AX33’s with this model, for the first one it fitted perfectly, the second one needed a (TINY!) bit of sanding on the back of the bottom plate, and the third one a little bit of sanding on the right side of the bottom plate. No idea why this is, but I suspect that it’s just how the body of the FDR-AX33 snaps together (or not)🤷🏽‍♀️

Disclaimer:
This is a DIY 3D Printable Replacement part, and as with all my projects: Use is 100% at your own risk and at your own responsibility! If your camera still has warranty (which I highly doubt though for an FDR-AX33 by now 😉 ), then I would STRONGLY recommend taking it in for repair under warranty instead if 3D printing this part yourself. Opening your camera and/or installing this replacement part will definitely void your warranty if you still have warranty! Do note that I have had no issues at all with my cameras which are using this replacement part, but that is obviously no guarantee for your camera’s and/or 3D print! So yet again: Use at your own risk!

IMPORTANT TIP: If you're planning to redistribute this project/product or if you are planning to use it for any commercial purpose (if the license permits these uses of course), then it is highly recommended that you 'copy-paste' this License and store it along with your download(s) for future reference.

License

BY DOWNLOADING, INSTALLING, COPYING OR OTHERWISE USING THIS PROJECT, PRODUCT, FILES OR ANY PART THEREOF (AND THE RELATED DOCUMENTATION) FROM XNL FUTURE TECHNOLOGIES, YOU ON BEHALF OF YOURSELF, OR ON BEHALF OF ANY ENTITY BY WHICH YOU ARE EMPLOYED AND/OR ENGAGED AGREE TO BE BOUND TO THIS LICENSE AGREEMENT.

IMPORTANT
Do note that all sections/'chapters' bellow constitute the entire license and that they are 'interconnected'. This for example means that if there is a section about Closed Source/Binaries License, that this doesn't mean that the rest of the license doesn't to those binaries. It just means that that section is specifically aimed at those files, while the rest of the license (where applicable) is also 'in effect' for those binaries.

Commercial Use Not Allowed

Commercial use of this project, product, the files, portions of it or the provided download(s) is not allowed.
This basically means that you can't use anything from this project, product, download(s) etc for commercial use.

Please note that 'Commercial Use Not allowed' does not only mean that you can't (re-)sell it, It basically means that you can't use this project, product, the files, portions of it or the provided download(s) for any commercial use and/or any financial gain.
Some other examples of commercial use which are not allowed are:

  • Using (parts of) the project, product, the files, code etc in or for your own work(s) which you intend to sell.
  • Using (parts of) the project, product, the files, code etc in your business so that you generate income by 'just using' the 'product' but not selling it or portions of it.
A simple example of this would be: You downloaded a "calculator app" from our website which has the 'No Commercial Use Clause', but you are using that 'calculator app' to actually calculate prices and tax rates for your store. This would then basically turn this 'calculator app' into a "business tool" for your business, even though you are not selling the 'calculator app', you are still using it for commercial purposes which isn't allowed with this license limitation.

Because we think that the "Standard No Commercial Use Allowed Clause" can be a bit vague or even a pitfall in some cases, we've decided to exclude certain situations from our 'Commercial Use Not Allowed Clause',  hoping that it will be a bit easier for people to understand what they can and can't do with the projects, products, files, models etc which are tied to our "Commercial Use Not Allowed Clause"

Excluded from this "Commercial Use Not Allowed" clause are:

  • Using, showing, demonstrating, educating with etc this project, product, the files, portions of it or the provided download(s) in vlogs or in/on blogs (which in most cases could actually be considered commercial use).
  • If this project/product is for example a 'software package/suite', you are allowed to install it for customers (upon their request) and charge your own 'installation fee' for this (because you are charging for your time/service). You are however not allowed to offer a special installation service for this project/product specifically on your website or to your customers, neither are you allowed to actually charge your customers for this project, product, the files, portions of it or the provided download(s).
  • If this project/product is for example a '3D Statue/model' and someone asks you to print it for them, you are allowed to print it and charge your customer for the material(s), power consumption and your time. You are however not allowed to specifically charge your customer for this particular model or offer this model as 'printable product' (either on it's own or as a 'model package').
  • In case of a Printable 3D Statue/Model you are also allowed to charge customers for your time, paint and 'artistic work' if you are requested to paint it for one of your customers. Keyword here is: Requested. You are for example not allowed to offer this model/statue in your store as 'order this model painted as you like'.

No Redistribution Allowed

It is not allowed to redistribute this project, product or the files included in the download(s) in any way (either altered or unaltered). This means that you are not allowed to share or (re-)upload any of the files which you can download from this project, product, tutorial etc.

If other portions of this license state that you can use/redistribute certain parts of this download (for example: snippets, examples from a source code, or specific files etc), then those specific 'items' are exempt from the 'No Redistribution Allowed' rule.

If you need to make this project, product or files available to others (for example visitors of your blog), then you should provide them with a direct link to this page instead of 're-uploading' them to your own blog/website for example.

No Derivatives, Remixes or Modifications allowed

It is not allowed to release (publish, share or otherwise) derivatives, 'remixes' or modified versions of this project, product, it's files and/or download(s).

This means that you are not allowed to release, share or publish modified, altered, translated, reformatted or 'remixed' versions of this project, product, it's files or download(s). The 'No Derivatives' also means that you are also not allowed to release, share or publish (own) work(s) which are based on this project, product, it's files or it's download(s), and it also means that you aren't allowed to publish (own) work(s) in which you have 'included'/'incorporated' this project, product, it's files or download(s) (this also applies if you 'only used a small/tiny portion' of our original work(s)).

You are however allowed to make derivatives or make modifications to our projects, products, models, images, files etc which have this clause in their license if it's only for your own personal use, given that you do not publish (or otherwise) share the modified files or works, and that it doesn't involve illegal or license invalidating practices like for example (but not limited to): Circumventing (software) license (key) activation, activating (often software) portions for which you don't own a valid license (key), circumventing copy or copyright protection(s) and more of the alike.

Extra note in regards to the fact that derivatives and thus 'modified works' are allowed for personal use
We do also consider it within 'personal use' if you for example would download a 3D model made by one of us which has the No Derivatives Clause in it's license, and you would then make a derivatives works of it as a personal gift for someone like for example your mother, friend etc. However do keep in mind when doing so, that you or your friend could be held responsible if the personal friend you gifted this item to, decides to use it for commercial purposes (which would obviously still not be allowed, because 'gifting something with a license on it, doesn't invalidate the license!).

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Our No Derivatives Licenses clause does not automatically gives you permission to redistribute the 'unaltered works', to know if you are allowed to redistribute the unaltered project, product, files, work(s), download(s) etc tied to this license (clause), you should consult/read the rest of the license for this project, product, file(s) or download(s). If the (rest of the) license permits redistribution, then this would mean (due to this clause) that you can only do so in unaltered (original) form and format.
